Yards Per Fantasy University: Adjusting For Different Formats

Fantasy Football has evolved almost every year since it first began. Today there are so many different formats that one roster construction strategy will not work for every format. Yes you are correct in thinking there will be similarities, but some small differences can win you leagues. Allow yourself to change your building style to produce the best results. We all want to win and versatility is the key to this! I am here to help breakdown some strategies for each format to hopefully help you bring in the championship! Lets dive right into this!

SuperFlex

Superflex is the new base format for most leagues starting out in today fantasy football leagues. If you are unfamiliar with this format lets break down the basics! Its fairly simple the rosters are constructed of one quarterback, x amount of running backs, x amount of wide receivers, x amount of tight ends, x amount of flex positions and then a Superflex! What is a superflex? Its simple it is a flex position that allows you to start a second quarterback or any position you feel. It pretty much is a 2 quarterback league.

Roster Construction

Now with the way I look at constructing a roster in leagues that are superflex, it gets pretty simple. The most important position to have depth is quarterback. The value of this position is cheapest in the start up drafts and then only rises from there. With that said, it is very important to leave the draft with as many starting quarterbacks as you can.

It sounds like an easy plan right? Not so much though, the ADP for a superflex league is much different than that of a standard one quarterback league.  DLF is one of the best resources for monthly ADP resources. Using their site we can see that the quarterback position goes early and often. Depending on my draft slot also determines my strategy. The back half of the turn usually lends to a quarterback stack, this is the prime spot to lock up your two starting quarterbacks. You will never have an opportunity to add another high caliper quarterback again. This will be the end of tier one and tier two of the quarterback position.Fantasy football formats

Although the option is available to wait till as well, as we see from the chart above. Round three seems to be the sweet spot to add a mid range quarterback. Players like Ryan Tannehill, Baker Mayfield, and Tua Tagovailoa start coming off the board. After round six there are few Starting caliber quarterbacks left. Some players with little dynasty value like Ryan Fitzpatrick, Drew Lock, and Ben Rothelisberger will fall to around round 10-11. After that no starters are left to be selected most times. With all of this being said it is extremely important to add quarterbacks early and often.

Tight End Premium

This is another scoring option in many leagues that are forming now. The premise behind this is to make the tight end position more valuable. Most leagues will give .25 or .5 point bonuses for each reception a tight end makes. This make the whole position a touch more valuable to me, however the top three become even more valuable. DLF does not have an ADP chart for tight end premium however we can use the super-flex chart and give each tight end tier a slight bump.

With that let’s take a look at these tight ends ADPs. Currently the top four tight ends our Travis Kelce, George Kittle, Kyle Pitts and Darren Waller in that order. All four of these player will be gone by round 4 in your drafts. This is basic dynasty and in tight end premium you can expect all to be gone by as early as the middle of round 3. So we can see by adding the premium to the tight ends these four will shoot up a full round. This is the same for the whole position Hockenson and Andrews will be off next and currently hold an ADP of around the seventh round. However expect late round 5 or round 6 in a premium league. Below is the superflex ADP to use as a guide, but expect a full round bump in premium leagues.

After the top 5-6 go, you may see one of two go between round 6-10 as the drop off in talent and upside is huge at this point. However as the later rounds approach I like to take a few high upside tight ends in premium leagues. I like trying to add players like Dawson Knox, Chris Herndon, Eric Ebron and Gerald Everett. This bonus on each reception can make these guys flex players in these leagues. Players like I listed are starters on there teams and will have more opportunity then the 4-5 wide receiver or running back on these teams.

Conclusion

We covered two different league styles that are newer to the fantasy community. If you have never tried them I suggest going out and giving it a shot, they are fun and help challenge your skills. Just use all the tools available from Mock Drafts, to guides, to ADP charts and even us over here at Yards Per. Always remember to know the rules and roster sizes of your leagues as well. These can alter your strategy when it comes to startup drafts. Last but not least remember this is a game and its for fun don’t eve forget that! Now go out there and win some championships!
