Week 7’s college football slate was one to remember. Six ranked matchups, high scoring contests, and a game of the year contender in Knoxville that resulted in a tear down of goal posts. While it seems there is no way the Week 8 college football calendar could top last week, we do have five ranked matchups and plethora of conference showdowns. Here are my favorite plays ahead of the Week 8 college football schedule.

Week 7: 4-5 (-1.05 units)
YTD: 30-34 (-7.25 units)

Iowa (3-3) vs. #2 Ohio State (6-0) (Ohio State -29; O/U 49)

Ohio State -29 (-110)

In 2022, teams favored by 4+ touchdowns are 22-9-2 ATS. C.J. Stroud is currently the betting favorite to win the Heisman, despite being without a top tier receiver in Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Ohio State has the best scoring offense (48.8 PPG). Iowa? Tied for 127th of 131 FBS programs, and second worst among Power Five conferences. This could be a look-ahead spot for Ohio State, as they have a trip to Happy Valley next week. Still, Ohio State has scored 167 points (27.8 PPG) in the first half of games this season. That almost doubles Iowa’s 88 points scored through six games. Ohio State rolls in this Week 8 college football matchup of Big Ten schools.

Kansas (5-2) vs. Baylor (3-3) (Baylor -10; O/U 58)

Over 58 (-110) – 2 units

Under Lance Leipold, the over has hit in eight of nine away games for the Jayhawks. The lowest total in that span was 58, where Kansas lost 55-3 in Stillwater against Oklahoma State. In their three road games this season, Kansas has scored over 42 points in each game. Whether it’s Jason Bean or Jalon Daniels at quarterback, Kansas has been able to light up a scoreboard. I’m getting on this one early in fear it jumps over the coming days. Take the over in this potential Big 12 shootout.

Week 1 targets

BYU (4-3) vs. Liberty (6-1) (BYU -7; O/U 58)

Liberty +7 (-115)

BYU has failed to meet their lofty preseason expectations. Some were saying they had an outside shot at the College Football Playoff, given returning talent and a strong schedule. Now, they could fall to .500 with a loss at Liberty. They have failed to cover their last five after their thrilling overtime win against Baylor. Hugh Freeze is 10-4 ATS as an underdog at Liberty. I’m taking the Flames over BYU on Saturday.

Memphis (4-3) vs. #25 Tulane (6-1) (Tulane -7; O/U 56.5)

Tulane -7 (-110)

Tulane finally cracks the top-25 and hosts in-conference foe Memphis. Under Willie Fritz, Tulane is 18-8 ATS (69%) as a home favorite. They have covered eight of their last nine contests. Tulane has covered in four of six against Memphis under Fritz, including their three home games. I’m anticipating a raucous crowd in New Orleans to welcome their newly ranked Green Wave.

#7 Ole Miss (7-0) vs. LSU (5-2) (LSU -1.5; O/U 65)

Under 65 (-110)

LSU has slowed their pace of play with the arrival of Brian Kelly. The under has been in play; after wins, the under is 4-0 compared to 0-2 after losses. Both teams have been top-tier on defense, ranking in the top-35 in scoring defenses. Ole Miss is the third best team on the ground (271.4 YPG), only trailing two military academies who run the triple option. Expect the clock to be running throughout this game.

#24 Mississippi State (5-2) vs. #6 Alabama (6-1) (Alabama -21; O/U 61.5)

Alabama -21 (-110)

Another heavy home favorite, but Nick Saban typically doesn’t have back-to-back stinkers. Since 2016, Alabama is 4-0 ATS coming off a loss, and clearing the spread by an average of 15 points. In Mike Leach’s two games against Alabama, Mississippi State lost 49-9 and 41-0. Alabama hasn’t been a juggernaut like recent years, but I’m expecting a big bounce back for the Crimson Tide at home.

Colorado (1-5) vs. Oregon State (5-2) (Oregon State -23; O/U 49)

Oregon State -23 (-115)

My last heavy favorite of the week. I touched on Colorado last week being the worst Power Five school in the country; out of 131 FBS programs, they rank 129th in scoring (14.5 PPG), 124th in yards (285.5 YPG), 125th in yards allowed (473.5 YPG) and 127th in scoring defense (38.2 PPG). The defensive stats were even boosted after securing their first win last week, a 20-13 overtime squeaker over Cal. Now they travel to Corvallis to face a strong Oregon State team. Both teams’ records ATS match their overall record. Take the Beavers to close out the Week 8 college football weekend.
