Week 6 was a bloodbath. 1-5 and a two-unit play loss. But there is no time to dwell: we have six ranked matchups on the Week 7 college football card. Each of the Power Five conferences have a ranked matchup this week in what should be the best college football week of the season. Here are my favorite plays.
Week 6: 1-5 (-5.55 units)
YTD: 26-29 (-6.2 units)
#19 Kansas (5-1) vs. Oklahoma (3-3) (Oklahoma -8.5; O/U 64.5)
Kansas +8.5 (-110)
Over 64.5 (-110)
Dillon Gabriel returns for Oklahoma, and Kansas will be without Jalon Daniels. But this Oklahoma defense has been shredded in Big 12 play, allowing 145 points in three games against Kansas State, TCU and Texas. Jason Bean played fine for Kansas as he replaced Jalon Daniels, and the Oklahoma rush defense has allowed over 900 yards in three conference games. Kansas has the firepower to go into Norman and pull the upset. I’ll take the points with Kansas.
Oklahoma returning Gabriel should give the offense somewhat of a spark; they were shutout in their rivalry game against Texas last week. I already touched on how bad the Oklahoma defense was; Kansas overs are 7-1 on the road under Lance Leipold. He has the offense going in the right direction, and I’m expecting a shootout in Norman.
#10 Penn State (5-0) vs. #5 Michigan (6-0) (Michigan -7; O/U 49)
Penn State +7 (-110)
Michigan stands at 6-0, but have only played one team above 500. Penn State was tested on the road in their opener at Purdue, where they won 35-31. Harbaugh has not been the best ATS against ranked opponents at Michigan and James Franklin has been strong as a road dog. I think Penn State comes out and surprises Michigan in their first test of the season.
California (3-2) vs. Colorado (0-5) (California -15; O/U 48)
California -15 (-110)
Colorado is the worst team among Power Five schools; they are 0-5 SU and ATS. Here is how Colorado ranks amongst 131 FBS schools: 130th scoring defense (43.2 PPG), 129th yards allowed (508.8 YPG), and 101st in turnover margin (-3). The closest game for Colorado this season? Two weeks ago, a 43-20 loss against Arizona. Take Cal in this Week 7 college football PAC-12 matchup.
UCONN (3-4) vs. Ball State (3-3) (Ball State -9.5; O/U 48)
UCONN +9.5 (-110)
Jim Mora has this team on the right track, winning two FBS games in back-to-back weeks. This Connecticut team had not won an FBS game since the Covid-19 season. Three of their four losses this season came against now-ranked teams. Now they get a MAC team in Ball State that has picked it up as of late when they started conference play. Back the Huskies with the points on the road.
#3 Alabama (6-0) vs. Tennessee (5-0) (Alabama -9; O/U 66)
Over 66 (-115)
Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide have scored at least 42 points in four of their last five in Knoxville. The over is 9-2 in Tennessee home games under Josh Heupel. If Tennessee is going to upset Alabama on the road, where Alabama has been vulnerable as of late, it’ll be through their high power offense. Take the over in what is scheduled to be the most exciting Week 7 college football game.
#25 James Madison (5-0) vs. Georgia Southern (3-3) (James Madison -12.5; O/U 67)
James Madison -12.5 (-115)
One of the best stories this season: James Madison is undefeated and ranked in their first year as an FBS school. They’ve been lead by great defensive performances (15 PPG, 14th nationally) and strong quarterback play from Todd Centeio (15 passing TDs / 1 INT). Georgia Southern quarterback Kyle VanTrease has thrown 11 interceptions in 6 games and has Georgia Southern at 114th nationally in turnover margin (-5); James Madison ranks 16th (+5). James Madison’s run defense allows just 42 YPG; if they continue this stout game, they’ll eliminate Jalen White (91 rushes for 521 yards and eight touchdowns) and force Vantrease to throw. James Madison makes it six-straight – against the spread and straight-up – as they beat Georgia Southern.
North Carolina (5-1) vs. Duke (4-2) (North Carolina -7; O/U 68)
North Carolina -7
North Carolina’s defense has improved over the last few weeks, and Duke just lost to a Georgia Tech team that fired their head coach earlier this season. Drake Maye has played like a top tier quarterback and gets a beatable Duke defense. I’m taking the Tar Heels in the battle of Tobacco Road to beat their in-state rivals.
#22 Mississippi State (5-1) vs. #22 Kentucky (4-2) (Mississippi State -4; O/U
Kentucky ML (+150)
Will Levis is back for Kentucky after they lost to South Carolina. This team should be completely different with Levis under the lights in Lexington with a ranked matchup. Mississippi State has the nation’s leading passer in Will Rogers (22 touchdowns to three interceptions). Kentucky has a top-15 pass defense that only trails Alabama and Georgia. If Kentucky contains Will Rogers, they win this game. Take the Wildcats as an underdog to win outright to cap off the Week 7 college football slate.
