David Montgomery Free Agency Preview
The 2022 season was David Montgomery’s worst since his 2019 rookie campaign. He failed to reach 1,000 yards for the third time in four years while catching the fewest passes since that inaugural season. David Montgomery will turn 26 years old before the first kickoff of 2023, when he will likely be playing for a new team. It’s hard to imagine the Bears will pay the estimated market value (Spotrac) of nearly $10M/year to a league-average plodder, especially when they have a Khalil Herbert waiting in the wings.
If Khalil Herbert inherits the starting gig, we can count on him as an RB2 in fantasy football for the next couple seasons. Khalil Herbert has been efficient in his limited opportunities since entering the league as a sixth-round pick in 2021. On over 100 carries this season, Herbert averaged six yards per carry and ranked top-5 in true yards per carry, yards per touch, and evaded tackles per touch (PlayerProfiler.com). He also ranked No.7 in yards created per touch and broke off a run of 15 or more yards on 5.6% of his carries which ranked inside the top-20.
