Tennessee Titans Offense

Play Caller: Todd Downing

Todd Downing is in an interesting situation entering the 2022 season. The Titans are coming off a season that saw Derrick Henry miss nine games and Ryan Tannehill struggle down the stretch including an early exit in the playoffs. There were two glaring issues with the Titans offense last season. They struggled to score early in games and were too predictable on first and second downs. They finished sixth in total plays, but only scored on 38.9% of their drives and ranked 23rd in turnover rate, which occurred on 13% of their drives. With all of that said, the team did finish 12-5 and won the AFC South. If they want to repeat as Division champs, they are going to need some help from some new additions like Robert Woods, Treylon Burks, and Austin Hooper. We know what this team can do in the run game, but if they are going to make a playoff run, they are going to have to be able to put up points in a hurry against a loaded AFC Conference.

QB Room

#17 Ryan Tannehill

Age: 34 HT: 6’4 WT: 217 College: Texas A&M Draft: RD1 Pick 8

Contract: 2 years / $29,500,000 per year (14th at position) – Expires 2024

If you ask Ryan Tannehill how he played in 2021, he will tell you he didn’t play to the level of his own expectations. Yes, he completed 67% of his passes, but his touchdown rate was a career low 4% and he threw 14 interceptions, which was more than he had thrown in any season since 2013. To make matters worse, the Titans traded A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles. Brown’s ability to turn short plays into big ones will be a huge loss for Tannehill. The Titans did add Robert Woods, Treylon Burks, Kyle Phillips, and Austin Hooper to this offense, so the skill positions aren’t exactly void of talent. Tannehill’s best days may be behind him, but he can certainly bounce back to a high level of efficiency in 2022.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Passing: 491 Attempts, 67.0% Comp Rate, 3,695 Yards (7.5 YPA), 24 Touchdowns (4.9%)

Rushing: 51 Attempts, 4.8 YPC, 246 Yards, 5 Touchdowns

#22 Derrick Henry

Age: 28 HT: 6’3 WT: 247 College: Alabama Draft: RD2 Pick 45

Contract: 2 years / $12,500,000 per year (5th at position) – Expires 2024

Derrick Henry was off to an impressive start through the first 8 weeks of last season before suffering a broken bone in his foot. Through Week 8, he had 219 carries for 937 yards and 10 touchdowns and was on pace for a career-high in receptions. His 17-game pace would have put him at 465 carries for 1,991 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 38 receptions for another 327 yards. He was second in juke rate (38.8%), third in evaded tackles (92), and faced a stacked box on 24.2% of his carries with an impressive 4.5 yards per carry. What’s even more impressive for a guy his size is that he’s had five consecutive seasons with a run of at least 74 yards or more including a 99-yard run in 2018. If he can stay healthy for a full season, he could once again finish as the RB1 in 2022.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Receiving: 8% Target Share, 39 Targets, 29 Receptions, 212 yards (7.3 YPR), 1 Touchdown

Rushing: 66% Rush Share, 338 Attempts, 1,553 Yards (4.6 YPC), 14 Touchdowns

WR Room

#2 Robert Woods

Age: 30 HT: 6’0 WT: 195 College: USC Draft: RD2 Pick 41

Contract: 4 years / $16,250,000 per year (22nd at position) – Expires 2026

Robert Woods missed the last eight games of the season due to an ACL tear suffered at practice with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. Through the first nine games of the season, he had compiled 45 receptions for 556 yards and four touchdowns. He was on pace for a fourth consecutive season with at least 85 catches and 900 yards receiving. The Titans were able to manufacture a trade for the veteran receiver for a future sixth-round pick, which if you ask me, is a great value-add for this offense. From a fantasy perspective, he has a chance to be the WR1 in this run-heavy offense, but that all depends on his health and the development of rookies Treylon Burks and Kyle Phillips.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Receiving: 23% Target Share, 113 Targets, 78 Receptions, 928 Yards (11.9 YPR), 5 Touchdowns

“it would not surprise me at all to see Burks lead this team in the receiving game”

#16 Treylon Burks

Age: 22 HT: 6’2 WT: 225 College: Arkansas Draft: RD1 Pick 18

Contract: 4 years / $3,592,398 per year (58th at position) – Expires 2026 – 5th year option available

Treylon Burks played three seasons for the Arkansas Razorbacks and finished his collegiate career with 146 receptions for 2,399 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was selected as the 18th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and arrives in Tennessee as the future of this franchise at the wide receiver position if you believe all the hype. He will fill the void left behind by A.J. Brown in this offense as a guy that can make big plays after the catch and run with some physicality. If Robert Woods is unable to return to form this season, it would not surprise me at all to see Burks lead this team in the receiving game.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Receiving: 18% Target Share, 88 Targets, 60 Receptions, 908 Yards (15.1 YPR), 7 Touchdowns

#15 Nick Westbrook-Ikhine

Age: 25 HT: 6’2 WT: 211 College: Indiana Draft: UDFA

Contract: 1 year / $895,000 per year (210th at position) – Expires 2023

Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, an UDFA, took advantage of his opportunities last season when the Titans lost Julio Jones and A.J. Brown to injuries. After finishing his rookie season with just 3 receptions in 2020, Westbrook-Ikhine would finish his second year with 57 targets, 37 receptions, 476 yards, and four touchdowns. He’s earned the trust of Ryan Tannehill and this offense and should be the WR3 in three-receiver sets to start the season. I would tread lightly in terms of overall expectations if Kyle Phillips continues to impress once the season starts.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Receiving: 11% Target Share, 54 Targets, 36 Receptions, 432 Yards (12.0 YPR), 3 Touchdowns

TE Room

#81 Austin Hooper

Age: 27 HT: 6’4 WT: 254 College: Stanford Draft: RD3 Pick 81

Contract: 1 year / $6,000,000 per year (20th at position) – Expires 2023

Austin Hooper arrives in Tennessee after spending the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He will plug in as the TE1 in this offense and should provide some weekly value from a fantasy perspective. He was locked into a deep tight end group in Cleveland with David Njoku and Harrison Bryant but gets a fresh start with little target competition in Tennessee at the tight end position. He’s compiled 298 receptions for 3,024 yards and 23 touchdowns over his six-year career in the NFL.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Receiving: 13% Target Share, 64 Targets, 47 Receptions, 471 Yards (10.0 YPR), 4 Touchdowns
