Miami Dolphins Offense

Play Caller: Mike McDaniel

Mike McDaniel takes over as the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins after spending the last five years in San Francisco under Kyle Shanahan. He spent four years as the run game coordinator before being named the offensive coordinator last season. He deserves a lot of the credit for the sub-packages that turned Deebo Samuel into a dual-threat player late in the season and into the playoffs. We can expect to see a lot of the same wide zone RPO scheme that we have become familiar with in San Francisco over the last several seasons. I believe this will simplify things for Tua Tagovailoa by utilizing simple math in reading the number of players in the box vs defenders in space. RPO schemes are built into the run game, so if we show a heavy box giving the defense a man advantage in the run game, we throw a pre-designed bubble screen or back side slant where the offense now has the advantage.

We know the 49ers get labeled as a RBBC team, and it looks like McDaniel may be taking the same approach in Miami. They added Chase Edmonds, Sony Michel, and Raheem Mostert to a backfield that included Myles Gaskin. If you follow the money, Edmonds appears to be the RB1 based on his two-year $12 million contract. The real competition is between Sony Michel and Raheem Mostert as the RB2. Michel signed a one-year $1.75 million deal, while Mostert signed for a one-year $3.125 million deal. It’s worth noting that Mostert is familiar with this system but is also 30 years old. Gaskin appears to be the odd man out unless there is a significant injury.

As for the passing game, the Dolphins have committed to giving Tagovailoa all the firepower he needs to take a massive leap in year three.
The Dolphins traded away five draft picks to land one of the most explosive players in the NFL in Tyreek Hill. They also signed free agent Cedrick Wilson to a three-year deal after spending his first three seasons in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. They will join one of the last year’s rookie phenoms in Jaylen Waddle and athletic tight end Mike Gesicki to form one of the best pass-catching groups in the NFL. This should be a break-out year for Tagovailoa and this Miami offense.

Contract: 2 years / $7,568,859 per year (24th at position) – Expires 2024 – 5th year option available

The pieces are in place for Tua Tagovailoa to be special in 2022. The Dolphins have set him up for success in every aspect of this offense. The Dolphins are 13-8 in games that Tua starts and now have a new look offense with shiny new toys. In 13 games played last season, Tua completed 67.8% of his passes for 2,653 yards and 16 touchdowns, but the ten interceptions caused some concern. Tua tried to will this team to wins and took chances he shouldn’t have last season. McDaniel preaches ball control and will create easy throws for Tua, giving his skill players space to operate after the catch. Tua has always been accurate and finished last season first in red zone completion rate (64.9%), first in deep ball completion rate (50%), third in accuracy rating (8.0), and fourth in play-action completion rate (69%). It’s now or never.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Passing: 551 Attempts, 67.5% Comp Rate, 4,135 Yards (7.5 YPA), 27 Touchdowns (4.9%)

Rushing: 52 Attempts, 4.6 YPC, 237 Yards, 2 Touchdowns

#2 Chase Edmonds

Age: 26 HT: 5’9 WT: 210 College: Fordham Draft: RD4 Pick 134

Contract: 2 years / $6,050,000 per year (14th at position) – Expires 2024

Chase Edmonds arrives in Miami after spending his first four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals as a complementary back. He rushed the ball for a career-high 116 times last season for 592 yards (5.1 yards per carry), and two touchdowns. As for the passing game, he’s recorded 96 receptions for 713 yards and four touchdowns over the last two seasons. He finished seventh in target share (13.4%), ninth in yards per route run (1.65), seventh in yards per touch (5.7), and 12th in juke rate (29.6%) last season. If he can stay healthy, he has the opportunity to lead this backfield and carve out an excellent role in this offense.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Receiving: 10% Target Share, 55 Targets, 44 Receptions, 330 yards (7.5 YPR), 2 Touchdowns

Rushing: 33% Rush Share, 155 Attempts, 728 Yards (4.7 YPC), 4 Touchdowns

#34 Sony Michel

Age: 27 HT: 5’11 WT: 215 College: Georgia Draft: RD1 Pick 31

Contract: 1 year / $1,750,000 per year (40th at position) – Expires 2023

Sony Michel is the closest thing Miami has to a power back in this offense. He spent last season with the Rams and filled in nicely after Cam Akers suffered a season-ending injury during training camp. He led the backfield with 208 carries for 845 yards and four touchdowns. He’s had three seasons with over 200 carries and 800 yards during his four years in the NFL. He should fill in as the short yardage and goal line back in this offense. He finished in the top ten last season in red zone touches with 47, so look for that to continue. Michel can provide quality play as a fill-in RB1 if Edmonds misses significant time.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Receiving: 4% Target Share, 22 Targets, 17 Receptions, 117 Yards (6.9 YPR), 0 Touchdowns

Rushing: 30% Rush Share, 141 Attempts, 619 Yards (4.4 YPC), 6 Touchdowns

#10 Tyreek Hill

Age: 28 HT: 5’10 WT: 185 College: West Alabama Draft: RD5 pick 165

Contract: 5 years / $30,000,000 per year (1st at position) – Expires 2027

There are not enough superlatives to describe Tyreek Hill and his accomplishments over his six seasons in the NFL. In his last two seasons alone, he’s been targeted 294 times and collected 198 receptions for 2,515 yards and 24 touchdowns. He’s also carried the rock 93 times for another 719 yards and six touchdowns over his career. He is electric with the ball in his hands and ready to prove that he can be dominant with or without Patrick Mahomes and an Andy Reid offense. I promise you Hill is not just a speed guy. He’s a technician for running routes and hits you with suddenness and burst that very few can even attempt to duplicate. He is a master at creating separation and pure magic when he has the ball in his hands in open space. He’s always one touch away from a big play. We will see McDaniel use Hill in various ways, and don’t be surprised if he’s used in a Deebo-type role when this offense needs a splash play.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Receiving: 24% Target Share, 132 Targets, 90 Receptions, 1,240 Yards (13.8 YPR), 10 Touchdowns
Rushing: 7% Rush Share, 33 Attempts, 210 Yards (6.4 YPC), 1 Touchdown

“Waddle can win at all three levels but does most of his work in the short to intermediate field areas, which will continue into the 2022 season”

#17 Jaylen Waddle

Age: 23 HT: 5’10 WT: 182 College: Alabama Draft: RD1 Pick 6

Contract: 3 years / $6,771,499 per year (41st at position) – Expires 2025 – 5th year option available

Jaylen Waddle is coming off a monster rookie season where he was targeted 140 times. He turned that into 104 receptions for 1,015 yards and six touchdowns. He finished sixth in win rate vs. man coverage (45.1%), seventh in route win rate (48.2%), and fourth in total route wins (257). He clocks in with 4.32 speed, just a hair behind the 4.29 Hill ran at his Pro Day. Waddle can win at all three levels but does most of his work in the short to intermediate field areas, which will continue into the 2022 season.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Receiving: 22% Target Share, 121 Targets, 87 Receptions, 995 Yards (11.4 YPR), 7 Touchdowns

#11 Cedrick Wilson Jr.

Age: 27 HT: 6’2 WT: 200 College: Boise State Draft: RD6 Pick 208

Contract: 3 years / $7,350,000 per year (40th at position) – Expires 2025

Cedrick Wilson was a sixth-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2019 and was expected to be a special team’s guy that would have to work his way up the depth chart. He saw eight targets in his rookie season but showed steady improvement and worked himself into the rotation. He put up 45 receptions for 602 yards and six touchdowns for the Dallas Cowboys last season and parlayed that into a nice contract with the Miami Dolphins. He will be the third receiver in three-receiver sets, but likely the fourth option behind Hill, Waddle, and Gesicki in this offense.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Receiving: 12% Target Share, 66 Targets, 43 Receptions, 498 Yards (11.6 YPR), 3 Touchdowns

TE Room

#88 Mike Gesicki

Age: 26 HT: 6’6 WT: 247 College: Penn State Draft: RD2 Pick 42

Contract: 1 year / $10,931,000 per year (8th at position) Franchise Tag – Expires 2023

Mike Gesicki is a freak athlete at the tight end position, standing 6’6 with 4.5 speed. His athletic profile jumps off the screen, and he’s proven to be a nightmare matchup for opposing defenses. The Dolphins led the NFL with 174 targets to the tight end position last season. Gesicki was the recipient of 112 of those targets and turned that into 73 receptions for 780 yards. He was first in slot snaps (412), third in routes run (485), ninth in target share (22.9%), third in air yards (1,010), and sixth in yards per team pass attempt (1.27). Gesicki should eat in this offense with so much attention being put on Hill and Waddle.

2022 Fantasy Outlook:

Receiving: 19% Target Share, 105 Targets, 71 Receptions, 754 Yards (10.6 YPR), 5 Touchdowns
