#Project32 – Kansas City Chiefs

In support of: 15 and the Mahomies Foundation
Kansas City Chiefs 2021 projections

15 and the Mahomies is dedicated to improving the lives of children. The Foundation supports initiatives that focus on health, wellness, communities in need of resources and other charitable causes.
It was established by NFL MVP, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes in 2019.

Nominated by Tyler (@TBillsAA)
“I chose 15 and the Mahomies not just because it’s Patrick Mahomes’ charity organization but I grew up in poverty, my mom and dad tried their best but couldn’t get a break. We benefitted immeasurably from multiple organizations when I was a kid and I truly don’t know where I would be without that help. 15 and the Mahomies focuses on helping children in communities of need have more equitable experiences as well as helping to provide support for education, athletics, mental and physical well being for the kids. The organization emphasizes the positivity that comes from team sports and how that helps to create memorable experiences as well as pathways to overcome the many hurdles children face when they grow up impoverished. They also encourage full community participation for those in need through various programs in neighborhoods with limited resources. From their website, they also have a 15 for 15 program which supports 15 different youth charity initiatives with an emphasis on academics, science, arts, classroom supplies, athletics, children with disabilities, after school programs and more. Donating to this organization will have a far reaching impact for children in need in multiple communities.”

Coaching Room

Head Coach: Andy Reid

Andy Reid spent 14 years (1999-2012) as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles where he won six NFC East Division titles, coached in five NFC Championship Games (1-4), and coached in Super Bowl XXXIX where the Eagles lost to the New England Patriots all while leading the team to a 130-93-1 record. After being dismissed from the Eagles after the 2012 season, he was immediately hired by the Kansas City Chiefs to be their head coach. In his eight years at the helm in Kansas City, the Chiefs have won five straight AFC West titles, played in three AFC Championship Games (2-1), and played in two Super Bowls (1-1) that includes a Super Bowl victory against the San Francisco 49ers after the 2019 season. You could say Andy Reid has had some success as an NFL Head Coach and he shows no signs of slowing down as this roster is built to make another run. Offensively, the Chiefs have arguably the most impressive passing game that uses 11 personnel at a 73% clip that incorporates a trips formation (18%) with Kelce isolated to the weak side. This allows the Chiefs to dictate coverage. The Chiefs also used RPO concepts more than any other team in the NFL in 2020. Their ability to create mismatches with Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill is so much fun to watch and with the additions made to the offensive line, this offense could be as explosive as ever entering in 2021.

Overall Rank: 1st/32

OL Room

LT Orlando Brown Jr. – PFF 77.8, Pass Blocking 77.8, Run Blocking 73.5

Orlando Brown Jr. was acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens that essentially was a first-round pick to replace Eric Fisher who tore his Achilles in the AFC Championship Game. Brown finished the 2020 season 25th in Overall PFF Grade, 23rd in Pass Block Grade, and 24th in Run Block Grade. Brown has been selected to two straight Pro Bowls and has not missed a game in his three years in the NFL.

LG Joe Thuney – PFF 74.2, Pass Blocking 73.1, Run Blocking 70.2

Joe Thuney was signed to a massive contract worth $80 million over the next five years. Thuney was originally drafted by the New England Patriots back in 2016 during the third round of the NFL Draft. He has ranked as one of the best left guards in the league with a top ten ranking in each of the last three seasons.

C Creed Humphrey – PFF 80.9, Pass Blocking 68.9, Run Blocking 84.7

Creed Humphrey was drafted in the second round out of the University of Oklahoma and will be locked in a position battle with Austin Blythe who was signed as a free agent after four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. Humphrey was a three-year starter at Oklahoma and has the versatility to play all three interior positions but struggles to gain leverage against bigger defensive tackles and playing in space. However, he has great hands and if he gets his fit on you, he’s tough to move as he has great upper body strength.

RG Trey Smith (Rookie)

Trey Smith is looking more and more like he could be the Week 1 starter at right guard with injuries to Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff and Kyle Long. Smith was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft after playing collegiately with the Tennessee Volunteers. Reports indicate that he has been dominant in camp and Peter Schrager of Good Morning Football has recently stated, “The biggest star out of training camp has not been Patrick Mahomes, hasn’t been Tyreek Hill, hasn’t been Clyde Edwards-Helaire, it is rookie right guard named Trey Smith.” That is very high praise for a sixth-round draft pick to be planted in as a Week 1 starter in August. The rich keep getting richer in Kansas City.

RT Lucas Niang (Rookie)

Lucas Niang was a third-round draft pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of TCU. Niang is getting the opportunity to start at right tackle after the injury to Mike Remmers, but according to camp reports, he may have been solidifying himself as the starter all along. Niang will be the third starting rookie in this group after choosing to opt out in 2020 due to COVID-19. If the Chiefs manage to improve along the offensive line with three rookies in the starting lineup this could be very dangerous for opposing defenses for years to come. Stay tuned.

QB Room

Patrick Mahomes (QB2)

Patrick Mahomes has been a starting quarterback for the last three seasons in the NFL and all he’s done is lead his team to a 38-8 record while throwing for 13,868 yards and 114 touchdowns with only 24 interceptions and a 6.8% touchdown rate. Did I mention he won the NFL MVP Award, played in two Super Bowls, won a Super Bowl, been selected to three Pro Bowls, and was a First-Team All-Pro in 2018. He was the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Texas Tech, and was the second quarterback off the board behind only Mitch Trubisky, who was the 2nd overall pick by the Chicago Bears. Trubisky is now a backup in Buffalo. Wow. The reality is that Mahomes could not have landed in a better spot than with Andy Reid in Kansas City. The Chiefs have arguably the best quarterback, wide receiver, and tight end in the NFL.

RB Room

Clyde Edwards-Helaire (RB18)

Clyde Edwards-Helaire was the 32nd overall pick in the 1st round of the 2020 NFL Draft after a very productive senior year at LSU. He finished his rookie season with 217 touches for 1100 yards and 5 touchdowns with an average of 5.1 yards per touch. With Le’Veon Bell and Damien Williams now gone, the expectations for Edwards-Helaire are high and we should expect to see an increase in touches both as a runner and as a pass-catcher.

Fantasy Outlook

Rushing: 230 attempts, 1081 yards, 7 touchdowns

Receiving: 75 targets, 53 receptions, 437 yards, 2 touchdowns

Total Fantasy Points: 258.4

New Toys: Jerick McKinnon

Old News: Le’Veon Bell (9/2), Damien Williams

Position Fantasy Rank: 31st/32

WR Room

Tyreek Hill (WR5)

Tyreek Hill has been in the NFL for five years and been selected to five Pro Bowls and had three First-Team All-Pro seasons. The combination of Tyreek Hill and Patrick Mahomes is absolutely scary for opposing defenses. Hill has a per game average of 8.4 targets, 5.4 receptions, 84.1 receiving yards, and 0.8 touchdowns in games played with Patrick Mahomes. He finished the 2020 season ninth in targets (134), third in air yards (1746), second in deep targets (32), seventh in red zone targets (18), second in total touchdowns (17) and fantasy points per game (21.9). The combination of Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce when it comes to high/low and stretch concepts is very difficult to defend.

Fantasy Outlook

Receiving: 144 targets, 97 receptions, 1430 yards, 15 touchdowns

Rushing: 17 attempts, 105 yards, 1 touchdown

Total Fantasy Points: 346.2

Mecole Hardman (WR56)

Mecole Hardman has played in all 32 games since being selected in the second-round out of the University of Georgia in the 2019 NFL Draft. He finished his rookie season with 26 receptions, 538 yards, and six touchdowns and finished his sophomore season with 41 receptions, 560 yards, and four touchdowns. With Sammy Watkins now in Baltimore, many expect Hardman to be the clear WR2 in this offense, but he will be pushed by Demarcus Robinson and Cornell Powell.

Fantasy Outlook

Receiving: 75 targets, 50 receptions, 781 yards, 6 touchdowns

Rushing: 4 attempts, 26 yards, 0 touchdowns

Total Fantasy Points: 167.2

Demarcus Robinson (WR100)

Demarcus Robinson did not have a single target in his rookie season back in 2016 after being selected in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida. He has slowly become a dependable option in this offense over the last two seasons combining for 915 yards and 7 touchdowns. Robinson is locked in a preseason battle with rookie Cornell Powell who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. The reality is that unless somebody becomes the clear favorite, the trio of Hardman, Robinson, and Powell should all see valuable reps in this offense.

Fantasy Outlook

Receiving: 44 targets, 29 receptions, 374 yards, 2 touchdowns

Total Fantasy Points: 77.9

New Toys: Antonio Callaway, Tajae Sharp

Old News: Sammy Watkins (10/9)

TE Room

Travis Kelce (TE1)

Travis Kelce has been selected to six consecutive Pro Bowls and earned First-Team All-Pro honors three times during his eight-year career. He has had six consecutive seasons with over 100 targets, 70+ receptions, and five consecutive seasons with over 1000 yards receiving. There is nothing Travis Kelce cannot do in the passing game at an elite level from the tight end position. He is in absolute control when it comes to his ability to create leverage and manipulate defenders to set up route side space and separation. Kelce will turn 32 this season, but shows no signs of slowing down and he’s married to an offense that features the best quarterback in the NFL, a true alpha WR that can stretch the defense, and one of the best offensive minds in Andy Reid. The reality is that if Kelce can continue to stay healthy there is no reason he doesn’t finish as the TE1 again in 2021.

Fantasy Outlook

Receiving: 150 targets, 105 receptions, 1401 yards, 12 touchdowns

Total Fantasy Points: 317.4

Noah Gray (TE43)

Noah Gray was turning heads during OTA’s and has continued to do so through camp. There will be a lot of eyes on him throughout the preseason to see if he can continue to be relevant in this offense. He is considered a late sleeper from a fantasy perspective, but unless Kelce gets injured and misses significant time, he is more likely to be used as an H-back or to simply give Kelce a few plays off on game day. However, if Kelce does miss significant time for any reason, Gray could make an immediate impact in PPR formats in this offense.

Fantasy Outlook

Receiving: 31 targets, 22 receptions, 263 yards, 2 touchdowns

Total Fantasy Points: 60.3
