The New Mexico State Aggies last appeared in a bowl game in the 2017 Arizona Bowl, where they defeated Utah State. The Bowling Green Falcons lost their last bowl appearance in the 2015 GoDaddy.com Bowl.

Tale of the Tape: New Mexico State Aggies
After nine years and a 25-74 record, New Mexico State and Doug Martin went in different directions. Enter Jerry Kill for 2022. And while 2022 started similar to those years, New Mexico State got on the right track. They picked up a win at the end of September to go 1-4. After losing the following week to Florida International, bowl dreams seemed bleak. But the Aggies got hot, closing the year winning five of their last six.
Starting quarterback Diego Pavia sustained an injury in their bowl clinching win against Valparaiso. Pavia is expected to play in the bowl game.

Tale of the Tape: Bowling Green Falcons
The nonconference schedule was not kind to Bowling Green. They scheduled two Power Five conference teams in UCLA (45-17 loss) and Mississippi State (45-14 loss). A thrilling seven-overtime thriller against FCS Eastern Kentucky didn’t go their way, either, resulting in a 59-57 defeat. But once conference play begun, the Falcons started piling up wins. Going 4-1 to start conference play, Bowling Green needed just one win in their final three against Kent State and two bowl eligible teams in Toledo and Ohio. An upset win at Toledo clinched Bowling Green’s bowl berth.
Among other bowl eligible teams, Bowling Green’s offense is the 8th worst. Teams ranking worse than the Falcons are 0-2 already to start bowl mania. Defensively, they are bottom-five among bowl eligible teams. Teams who are worse than the Falcons defensively are 1-2 this bowl season.

Two different focuses on offense. New Mexico State relies heavily on the run, while Bowling Green airs it out. New Mexico State’s pass defense is one of the best in the country, ranking 13th in passing yards allowed. Their 13 passing touchdowns surrendered ties for the 13th best mark nationally. Both teams surrender 21 rushing touchdowns, ranking tied for 85th nationally. But that plays into the hands of the New Mexico State offense. The Aggies rank as the slowest team in FBS at just 58.1 plays per game. They want to grind out the clock on the ground. And against this Bowling Green defense, I think they’ll succeed at it. New Mexico State gets coach Kill his first bowl win, upsetting Bowling Green.
