Bio

Marvin Mims Jr. was a consensus four-star recruit across all college football ranking sites. The Texas native set the state record for receiving yards in a high school career (5,485) and for a season (2.629). Mims tallied 32 touchdowns on 117 receptions as a senior in high school. Mims chose to attend Oklahoma over Stanford to play in Lincoln Riley’s offense.

Fantasy football

It didn’t take long for Mims to make an impact for the Sooners. As a true freshman, he led the Sooners in receiving touchdowns and yards with Spencer Rattler. The nine touchdowns set a new Oklahoma Sooner freshman record and tied for the most in the Big 12. His 37 receptions tied for the team lead. This type of season generated post season awards, including freshman All-America nominations by multiple publications.

Mims’ sophomore season did not have the jump many expected. He was still one of the top receivers on the team, but a quarterback change from Rattler to Caleb Williams proved to be non-beneficial for the sophomore. Despite his play not taking a massive leap, Mims did manage to finish top-5 nationally in yards per catch (22.0). In his first season without Lincoln Riley, Mims took off in his junior year. Back-to-back seasons with over 20-yards per catch. Mims was a threat in the open field and going vertical; he recorded six 40-yard receptions and five 50-yard receptions in 2022.

Despite declaring early, Mims finishes in the top-10 in Sooner history for both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Bottom Line:

After testing well at the NFL Combine, Marvin Mims Jr. appears to be one of the most slept on at any position. He declared early from a Power Five school. Mims has the ability to create after the catch, while also making a spectacular catch. He had good awareness of where he was at on the field in relation to the sideline and mark to gain. Mims does this while not being the biggest at his position. This could cause problems down the line as to where he will line up on the field. He could be limited to a more slot role despite being productive on the outside in an open Big 12 Conference.

While his route tree was limited at Oklahoma, Mims did not shy away about addressing this issue. I would expect Mims to show this off more at his pro day. Currently, Mims is projected to go in the third round of April’s NFL Draft. Day two draft capital would be massive for Mims and his fantasy stock. Pre NFL Draft, I currently have him as a mid-second round pick in rookie drafts in both single quarterback and superflex rookie drafts.
