Marvin Harrison Jr 2024 NFL Scouting Report

Marvin Harrison Jr. 2024 Scouting Report

Marvin Harrison Jr | WR | Ohio State

Background

Marvin Harrison Jr. has headlined this draft from the very start. His superb play has resulted in talks of him being potentially the first wide receiver to be drafted first overall since 1996. And it’s for good reason. Harrison has reached 65+ receptions, 1200+ yards and double digit touchdowns in both of his last 2 seasons. This is despite facing a massive quarterback downgrade this year. Harrison has been getting praised as a generational, blue-chip, can’t miss prospect. Is it worth it?

Scouting Report

It’s rare to see someone with the combination of size and athleticism like Harrison possess. Despite being huge at 6’4, 205 pounds, Harrison has impressive athletic traits and doesn’t move like many 6’4 players. He’s capable of taking the top off defenses and burning corners using pure speed. His top speed is frankly impressive. What’s more impressive is how he’s able to maintain that speed while making cuts. On the flip side, Harrison isn’t a very appealing player after the catch. He doesn’t have that twitchiness to make defenders miss and usually goes down after first contact.

Harrison’s knack of getting open will be a delight for whatever quarterback he ends up playing with. He eats up space fast as he’s explosive off the snap and can get to full speed instantly. He marries this stop and go speed with excellent change of direction. Like mentioned before, he loses no speed in any brakes or cuts he makes. However, Harrison is diddly when decelerating for a curl route. When he throttles down, he takes too many steps, giving the defender a chance to recover.

His technique as a route runner can’t be overlooked either. When facing press, Harrison is by far the best in the class at beating it. He has an amazing release. With efficient footwork, he sets up the defender to make false moves. He has 3 other ways to beat press; swatting away a corner’s punch, running through contact or evading the contact. Furthermore, he’s proficient at recognizing the cornerback’s leverage and blindspots. He can use these to his advantage and separate. Against zone, Harrison can read the coverages pre-snap and find the soft spot instantly.

Getting open is great, but it doesn’t matter in the end if you can’t catch the ball. Luckily, Harrison does that at a high level as well. He has strong hands and is able to secure a catch through contact. With his size, he’s even capable of tracking and catching a ball over a defender. He integrates these imposing hands with sufficient ball tracking skills to make himself a qualified deep threat.

Best Landing Spot: Arizona Cardinals

The Chicago Bears came in at a close second. However, out of all the teams with a realistic chance at Harrison, the Cardinals have the best quarterback. And with Hollywood Brown having an underwhelming finish to the season, his departure is imminent. That would make Harrison the main focal point of the passing game instantly. The Cardinals receiver room is dreadful and in need of a true wide receiver one. Harrison would give them this.

Dynasty Outlook

Is the hype real? Is Marvin Harrison Jr. really a blue-chip prospect? The answer is yes. The amount of prospects that have his blend of size, athleticism and technique is scarce. He will be a problem in the NFL from day 1 and has upside to join the elite club of receivers. With all that being said, Harrison in dynasty drafts should not drop below the top 3 picks.
