Hooked On Bo Nix: Why the Broncos Rookie is the most NFL ready QB of the 2024 class

Bo Nix: Ready For The NFL

If you grew up in the 90’s like myself, you have vivid memories of those classic Hooked on Phonics commercials engrained in your psyche. The informercials ran non-stop, forever cementing Hooked on Phonics as a statue of immovable nostalgia.

Denver made it clear this past April, Sean Payton and the Broncos are Hooked on Bo Nix, for all intents and purposes, and they believe they got their guy. The former Oregon Duck was selected the 12th overall pick, which makes that selection the highest Denver has selected a quarterback in eighteen years. Change was needed after the tumultuous play of Russell Wilson the past two seasons, and rest assured, the Broncos have done their homework on Nix. His pocket presence, vision, and accuracy at Oregon stands out on his college tape. Despite his impressive season, Nix seems to have gotten less of the limelight due to being in a deep quarterback class filled with big name signal callers such as Caleb Williams, Michael Penix Jr, Jayden McDaniels, and JJ McCarthy.

Experience

The truth of the matter however, is that Bo Nix is the most experienced quarterback in the class. He has the most pass attempts, passing touchdowns, and second most passing yards out of all qualifying NCAA quarterbacks in 2023. Nix also threw the least amount of interceptions out of the top 25 college QBs last season (3). Let’s examine passing stats from the 2023 NCAA Football season. As we can see, Nix is firmly entrenched at the number two spot for total passing yards, ahead of the likes of Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, JJ McCarthy… almost everyone else, trailing only Atlanta’s Michael Penix Jr. for total passing yards in 2023, whom was drafted 4 sports earlier than Nix at the number eight spot in the 2024 NFL Draft:

There’s definitely a need to read between the lines here. A deeper look reveals how Nix, despite having less passing yards than Penix on paper, was the more productive and efficient passer between the two. Bo Nix totaled 4,508 yards passing and had only 85 less passing attempts (only 395 yards less on one less game played), yet on those attempts- Nix boasted a 2023 best 45 passing touchdowns with only 3 interceptions thrown. Even more impressive is that Nix managed to earn a completion percentage of 77.4 percent – the best percentage out of all quarterbacks in the NFL draft this past April.

Bo Nix vs Caleb Williams

Nix and the Oregon Ducks went head to head against Heisman Trophy Winner Caleb Williams and the USC Trojans last November, giving us a glimpse of what the futures of both now NFL quarterbacks in store for fans. Most notably, Bo Nix thoroughly outplayed Williams in the matchup, and delivered a gutsy, eye-opening performance, throwing for over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns in an impressive victory that caught the attention of many.

NFL Hall of Famer Kurt Warner also had his own raving review on the newest Denver Broncos quarterback. Warner stated on a podcast on Fantasy Footballers

“I looked at the Bo Nix tape and said if there was one quarterback that was asked to do more of what you’re going to be asked to do at the NFL level than any of the other guys, it was Bo Nix.”

-Kurt Warner, NFL Hall of Fame QB

What better endorsement can you get from an All-Time Hall of Fame quarterback than one from Kurt Warner himself? It’s evident that Bo Nix has all the tools. Experience. Vision. Accuracy. Versatility. Bo Nix has it all, and If Nix’s track record is any indication- he’ll be a special player that will be mentioned among the best in this draft class for years to come.
