A head-to-head loss to Toledo kept Eastern Michigan from their first ever MAC Championship appearance. But hopes of making the title game didn’t seem possible early in the season. They lost the conference opener at home to Buffalo 50-31. Another home loss to Northern Illinois by a score of 39-10. Had it not been for a 1-3 record in home conference games (the Eagles went 4-0 in road conference games), the Eagles make school history.

Tale of the Tape: San Jose State Spartans
A large reason San Jose State went from a five-win team a season ago to bowl eligible team in only 11 games was improvement in quarterback play. Chevan Cordeiro transferred in from Hawaii. His turnover rate dropped considerably from 3.1% to 1.0%. As a result, the Spartans finished as a top-5 team in turnover margin (+12). The defense made massive strides in 2022, going from the 8th best defense (of 12) in the Mountain West to 4th this year. It starts up front; their 36 sacks ranks tied for 15th nationally.

All Mountain West First Team and named to the Pro Football Focus All-American team. Third on the team with 65 tackles and leads the team with nine sacks. Forced two fumbles and recovered one.

Eastern Michigan went 0-3 this season against bowl eligible teams, getting outscored 126-76. San Jose State has only turned the ball over six times all season.
