Bio

Drake Maye grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he attended Myers Park High School. In his two years as a starter, Maye threw for over 6,700 yards and 86 touchdowns. Maye completed 68.5% of his pass attempts over that span. Maye was one of four quarterbacks in the 2021 class who earned a five-star designation by 247sports. Given his family background and strong ties, North Carolina was an easy choice for Maye; both parents attended the university, while two of his three brothers also attended UNC. Maye was the top recruit in a top-15 signing class for the Tar Heels.

As a redshirt freshman, Maye’s UNC debut could not have gone better. He racked up numerous awards, including ACC Player of the Year, ACC Offensive Player of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year, and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year. Maye became only the second player to ever sweep the four awards, joining former Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston. North Carolina went 9-3 in the regular season, earning a trip to the ACC Championship game, where they fell to Clemson. A Holiday Bowl loss to Oregon finalized a 9-5 season for North Carolina, losing the last four. After reported lucrative NIL deals, Maye elected to remain in Chapel Hill for his eventual final season.

Maye lost his favorite target, Joshua Downs, to the NFL Draft, and was without talented wideout Tez Walker for a portion of the season. Still, Maye led the charge for the Tar Heels, going 8-4 in the regular season. Maye finished 12th nationally in passing yards (3,608) and 24th in passing touchdowns (24).

Highlight Reel

Archetype: Pro-Style quarterback

Yards Per-Formance Grade: 95.5 (99th percentile)

Draft Projection: Top 10

Bottom Line:

Drake Maye finds himself in the conversation as one of the top quarterbacks in this year’s class. While he does not have the starting history as others in his class, he still logged two full seasons with the Tar Heels. He should fit nicely as a more modern quarterback: athletic, with great arm velocity. He’ll be able to push the ball down the field and has done well under pressure thus far in his career.

Maye will need to work on his mechanics; when they slip, it can lead to misses to wide open receivers or turnovers. He is also not afraid to take risks, which can be beneficial, but also create short offensive possessions. This can minimized if he lands in the right system and right quarterback coach.

In your 2024 dynasty rookie drafts, I would expect Maye to come off the board in the early-to-middle of the second round. In superflex dynasty rookie drafts, Maye’s value is more enticing and you could see him come off the board as early as the top-5.
