Bio

Bryce Young was the top dual threat quarterback in the 2020 high school class. Young attended football powerhouse Mater Dei in Santa Ana, California for high school. He contributed as a freshman for Mater Dei, where Young accounted for over 1,400 total yards and 14 touchdowns. Young led Mater Dei to a state title as a junior, where Young threw for 3,800 yards and 39 touchdowns. For his high school career, Young threw for 13,250 passing yards and 152 touchdowns. Young also accounted for over 1,000 yards and 26 touchdowns on the ground.

Fantasy football

Like others in his class, Young’s college career was off to an odd start due to the Covid pandemic. Young managed to appear in seven games despite playing behind a first round pick in Mac Jones. As a starter in 2021, Young shined for the Crimson Tide. He ranked second nationally in passing yards and passing touchdowns. Young managed to support two 1,000-yard receivers in Jameson Williams and John Metchie III, both drafted in the top-45 picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. Doing this while leading the Crimson Tide to a 12-1 record before the College Football Playoffs, Young was awarded the Heisman Trophy.

A year removed from winning the Heisman Trophy, Young was now without his top two targets in Williams and Metchie III. Yet, he managed to put up similar numbers without NFL talent for support. Young missed the Texas A&M game after suffering an injury against Arkansas, but still managed to produce similar touchdown rates (8.6% in 2021 to 8.4% in 2022) and yards per attempt (8.9 YPA to 8.8 in 2022) for the 2022 season. Young finished his Alabama career with a 23-4 record.

Draft Projection: Top-5

Bottom Line:

If Bryce Young was was 6-2 and weighed 220 pounds, Young is most likely your first overall pick in April’s NFL Draft. But that’s not the case; Young checked in the NFL Combine at 5-10 and 204. And even the 204 appeared heavier than his playing weight. But when you turn on the film, it’s apparent as to why Young is still in the conversation for the first overall pick. He displayed a calm demeanor in crunch time and often delivered. He was an accurate passer and didn’t turn the ball over. When he lost two receivers to the NFL and they were not replaced with typical Alabama receivers, he was arguably better than his Heisman season. The ultimate question with Young boils down to his height: can he produce in the NFL despite being one of the shorter draftees in recent memory?

For superflex dynasty rookie drafts, Young will be a top-six selection. He falls in a second tier behind Bijan Robinson. That tier consists of Young, C.J. Stroud, and Anthony Richardson at quarterback, Jahmyr Gibbs at running back, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba at wide receiver. For one quarterback dynasty rookie drafts, Young will fall between the back end of the first round and an early second round selection.
