Braelon Allen Scouting Report

Braelon Allen 2024 Scouting Report

Braelon Allen is currently a running back at Wisconsin. He is in his junior season.

Background

Braelon Allen is setting himself up to be one of the highest drafted running backs in the 2024 NFL draft. He’s rushed for over 1k yards and 10 touchdowns in his previous 2 seasons and would be in a good position to do it again if it wasn’t for injuries. This is despite being only 19, giving him plenty of time to develop into an even better player.

Scouting Report

Allen’s biggest strength is his power. With his 6-2, 238 pound frame, he’s excellent after contact as he’s able to break through tackles or take defenders on piggy back rides and gain extra yardage. He marries this with his contact balance which allows him to shrug off arm tackles with ease and continue to run at full speed. He seeks out contact but sometimes does this too much, missing holes on the outside as a result.

This vicious power comes at the cost of athleticism. He has a good burst, and If he reaches his top speed, there’s not many people who can catch him. The problem is he takes far too long to reach that speed. His speed also noticeably diminishes when he changes direction and his stop start speed isn’t good either.

In the backfield, Allen has his strengths and flaws. He stays patient, waiting for his blocks to develop and finding a lane to go through. On the flip side, his vision isn’t very good as his athleticism seemingly limits where he looks to go. He doesn’t favor bouncing it outside, sometimes missing holes there which makes him more predictable. However, he does a good job at keeping his pads low despite his larger size and keeping his shoulders squared.

Furthermore, Allen struggles most when he reaches the second level. This is partly due to his lack of athleticism which I already talked about. The other part of it is the fact that he’s a tad bit slow when reading his blockers upfield. He seemingly hesitates when reaching a blocker, which significantly slows him down and allows defenders to catch up. He’s also not very elusive and he’ll fail to make defenders miss more often than not. He makes up for this with his power but don’t expect any ankle breakers coming from him.

On 3rd down, the expectation is he’ll be in the game. This is because of his exceptional blocking skills. His frame and physicality allows him to pick up anyone who gets free from the offensive line. He also has the awareness to comprehend where the extra blocker is needed and where the blitz is coming from. As a receiver, nothing will catch your eye, but he is serviceable. He has solid hands but a limited route tree that will need to be developed at the next level.

Best Landing Spot: Dallas Cowboys

With Tony Pollard having an underwhelming season and being an expiring contract, Allen is a perfect fit. The Cowboys have one of the worst red zone offenses in the league and Allen would provide a huge boost in that department. He’d also give the Cowboys a much needed reliable blocker standing alongside Dak Prescott.

Dynasty Outlook

With Allen’s age, frame and 3rd down ability, he holds a relatively high upside. However, there are major concerns that plummets his dynasty draft value. With how everything stands currently, Allen should be drafted somewhere around the mid 2nd round range.
