Bio

Bo Nix is one of the more decorated quarterbacks in Alabama high school history. Playing at Pinson Valley High, Nix set the state record with over 12,000 total yards of offense while recording a state record 161 touchdowns (127 passing; 34 rushing). Nix won Pinson Valley to consecutive state championships while being named the Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year. As a member of the 2019 high school class, Nix was ranked 62nd nationally by 247Sports and the 2nd ranked dual-threat quarterback.

Auburn

Nix enrolled early at Auburn, stepping on campus at the start of the 2019 spring semester. As a true freshman, Nix won the starting job and put his name on the map with a neutral site win against the Oregon Ducks. Nix went 9-4 in his freshman year, including an Iron Bowl win over rival Alabama. An impressive freshman year had Tiger fans thinking Nix could lead them to the promise land, similar to greats like Cam Newton.

Unfortunately for Nix and the Tigers, he never took that big leap everyone had hoped. Over Nix’s next two years, he threw for 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions across 21 games (12-9). Nix completed just under 60% of his attempts in his three years as the Auburn starter. At the conclusion of the 2021 season, Nix decided to enter the transfer portal, electing to play for Dan Lanning and Oregon.

Oregon

His 4th year as a collegiate starter was the turning point Nix was looking for. Nix led the Ducks to a 10-3 record, including a Holiday Bowl win over Drake Maye and North Carolina. While he completed below 60% of his attempts at Auburn, Nix saw a career high in attempts while having his most accurate passing season (71.9%) to date. This landed Nix as a semifinalist for numerous quarterback awards.

Fantasy football

Returning for his 5th year saw another jump in Nix’s career, leading Oregon to a 12-2 season. The Washington Huskies were the lone team to beat Oregon, both in the regular season and the Pac 12 Championship. Nix closed out his Oregon career with a Fiesta Bowl victory over Liberty, along with a trip to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony. Nix finished 3rd, behind Jayden Daniels of LSU and Michael Penix Jr. of Washington. Bo Nix finished his collegiate career with arguably the best season an Oregon quarterback has ever had, with school records for completions (364), passing yards (4,508) and passing touchdowns (45).

Draft Projection: Day 2

Bottom Line:

Bo Nix’s move from in-state Auburn to Oregon proved to be the best thing for his career. He took the next step from an above average Power Five starter to a Heisman finalist. In his time at Oregon, Nix displayed a high football IQ, along with good mobility and arm strength. Thanks to an extra year due to the Covid pandemic, Nix enters the NFL Draft with the most collegiate starts in NCAA history. Nix has played well under pressure, proving difficult to bring down throughout his career.

Unfortunately for Nix, his 61-career starts means he will be 24 years old as a rookie. And while he played well under pressure, he did not score well with a clean pocket. While Nix had success in Oregon’s system, the Ducks’ play calling led to many screens and passes behind the line of scrimmage. This led to one of the lower average depth of target (aDot) for Nix in this class.

Given his age and a more top heavy quarterback class, I would expect Nix to be a Day 2 selection in this year’s NFL Draft. Nix should be able to be a reliable backup option, but competing in camp and sitting behind a starter would benefit him.
