An Electric Rookie Performance
Jahmyr Gibbs success last season gave us only a small snippet of what he’s capable of. He flourished in a change of pace, thunder and lightning role with David Montgomery, and while his speed is evident, he’s shown signs of being a capable , versatile multi-dimensional running back who is not only an elite runner, but is also skilled in the passing game. Gibbs was able to rack up almost 1,000 rushing yards (945), finished the season 5th OVR in yards per carry, and totaled 11 touchdowns on the season. What sets Gibbs apart is his explosiveness and elusiveness in open space. Speaking of lightning, Gibbs has shown an elite ability to take top off the defense, as evidenced by his top 3 ranking in breakaway runs/run rate.
Make no mistake, Gibbs is primed for an even bigger season in year two.
Season Outlook
This season, I fully expect the Lions to feature Gibbs with a heavier workload and increased usage and receive the most carries. (Think Lightning and Thunder, as opposed to the Thunder and Lightning approach we saw from Detroit last season). Gibbs is PPR gold, is one of the more efficient options available at the running back position, and finished 2023 with an almost 60 percent snap share. His average ADP projects to be in the top 10-13th OVR range this season- I would go even further to say that he belongs in the Top 3 RB convo for 2024. Gibbs recorded over 50 receptions last season, a number that should only increase since Gibbs has proven to be the most prolific pass catcher in the Lions running back room. Lion’s GM Brad Holmes echoes the sentiment that Jahmyr Gibbs will be a force to be reckoned with in year two :
“Again, I’m just so excited. He’s gonna be better next year, like this was just scratching the surface of what he did this year,” Holmes states. “Next year’s gonna be even better which is scary. But super proud of him and he’s so humble. He’s worked hard and he’s a perfect fit for us.”
-Brad Holmes, Lions General Manager
Improved O-Line
The Lions have made it a priority to strengthen their O-line over the last two years. They reached a contract extension with 1st Team All-Pro Offensive Tackle Penei Sewell, and made a series of key free agency signings to keep the core of the second-best rated offensive line in football intact. Continuity is key, and it will bode well for this O-line group, which is only expected to get even better next season-with Gibbs being a direct beneficiary.
The Bottom Line
Gibbs is in the elite RB tier this year, and should be considered in the same RB1 tier as Christian McCaffrey, Kyren Williams, etc. He’s that talented. Firmly entrench Gibbs at the top of your draft boards, with confidence. If his ADP is any indication, Gibbs will be coming off the board early in fantasy drafts this season. As GM Brad Holmes stated, Gibbs is just scratching the surface of his potential.
