Week 2 Thursday Night Showdown on DraftKings
Vikings vs Eagles Draftkings Showdown
Showdown Captain mode is a DraftKings tournament where you have $50,000 to create a lineup using 6 players from a standalone single game. One of those players will be your captain. The captain costs 1.5 times their salary and will accumulate 1.5 times the points. As with every slate, GAME THEORY IS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. Even more so in Showdown, you want your lineup to tell a story of how the game will go. There are a lot of options based on how you see the game going but ALWAYS make sure there’s correlation between your players.
Vikings @ Eagles
Spread: PHI -7
Over/Under: 49
Injuries to Monitor
Kenneth Gainwell is dealing with a rib injury and will not play.
Breakdown
Last week the Eagles defeated the Patriots 25-20 but didn’t look that impressive in doing so. Hurts only threw for 170 yards and they only rushed for 97 yards as a team. Defensively they allowed Mac Jones to throw for over 300 yards and only allowed 76 yards on the ground.
The Vikings lost 17-20 in a close game with Tampa Bay. They probably should have won the game but were unable to capitalize on a number of opportunities. Offensively they played well outside if scoring points. Cousins threw for 344 yards and two TDs. The rushing game never really got going as they only had a league low 41 yards. They allowed 169 yards passing and two TDs and 73 yards rushing.
With an over/under of 49 there’s some scoring expected but as TD favorites at home I’ll be heavier on the Eagles side. I’ll have a couple lineups that are geared towards an Eagle blowout. In that scenario the Eagles defense is the only D I’d consider.
There isn’t a ton of value on this slate so it gets ugly quick when using Jefferson or Hurts as captains. I’ll definitely still use them because of their upside but I’ll likely be a little underweight. There is some value opening up at RB for the Eagles and I prefer Penny.
Captain/Flex
Justin Jefferson $18,600/$12,400
He’s a cheat code plain n simple. Twelve targets in Week 1. He has the safest floor while still offering an incredible ceiling. If you’re paying up use Jefferson it’s that simple. I’ll have him in most of my lineups except for a couple large fields where I want to get different.
Jalen Hurts $17,100/$11,400
I don’t care about last week. New England is a tough place to play when Belichick has that time to prepare. Although the Vikings looked good defensively against Baker Mayfield, this is a whole other animal. I’ll have Hurts as my highest owned captain.
AJ Brown $15,900/$10,600
Brown had 10 targets, seven receptions and 79 yards last week. Despite Hurts not throwing for many yards, Brown and Smith still had productive days. He’ll continue to see a huge target share and his big play upside leans me to playing him at Captain over Smith.
TJ Hockenson $10,200/$6,800
While Hockenson only had 35 yards last week, the target volume was encouraging. He caught eight balls on nine targets. Cousins threw 44 pass attempts last week and as heavy underdogs on a pass first offense, Hockenson will see plenty more targets in this one.
Dallas Goedert $8,700/$5,800
Goedert only had one target and zero catches. For that reason he’ll likely go somewhat overlooked especially at captain. The savings allows some nice roster options on a slate with little value. We saw him outscore both Smith and Brown in a number of games last year.
The Rest
Devonta Smith $9,000
I prefer the upside of Brown at captain but you can absolutely make a case for Smith. He matched Brown in targets(10) and receptions(7) last week and also scored a TD.
Kirk Cousins $9,200
Cousins threw for the 2nd most passing yards last week. While the Eagles should look better defensively than they did in week 1, they did give up over 300 yards to Mac Jones. Cousins on the road in prime time worries me a bit but his upside plus this talented receiving core warrant a play.
Alexander Mattison $7,600
Mattison played on 73% of snaps last week and got the bulk of the work. He was very inefficient on his 11 carries and three catches totalling 44 yards. I don’t love his upside as far as a captain play goes but a RB with a solid workload is always worth a stab at flex on a one game slate.
Jordan Addison $6,400
After 60 yards and a TD in his first game as a pro I expect Addison to be pretty popular. He’s definitely talented in a pass first offense but we’ve seen volatility from rookie receivers. Add the fact that he faces a solid Eagles defense and I’m willing to bank that he doesn’t pay off at captain at a high ownership but will play him at flex.
KJ Osborn $5,000
Osborn only had three catches on six targets last week. On a slate starving for value he could be a good play considering the Vikings passing volume.
D’Andre Swift $4,000
Swift is incredibly frustrating because we’ve seen flashes of his immense talent. They’re simply few and far between. He was barely on the field on Sunday so that will have to change for him to hold weekly value. However on a one game slate he has enough big play upside to pay off this price even on limited touches.
Rashaad Penny $1,600
I prefer Penny over Scott for the upside. He can break off big runs and do more with less touches.
Quez Watkins $3,000
Watkins doesn’t offer much upside but similar to Osborn you need to save salary somewhere. He will get some targets and maybe a chance at a TD. That’s more than you can say for some of the guys below him.
Boston Scott $2,200
Scott always has a chance at a TD but probably doesn’t have much upside outside of that.
Ty Chandler $1,200
Chandler was clearly far behind Mattison in the pecking order totalling only 4 touches. He did have a nice 18 yard reception and will be used in the return game. It doesn’t take much to pay off this salary.
