Top 5 Week 1 Takeaways
It finally happened, week 1 could not have had more hype! I know I had best ball drafts and a couple rookie drafts to hold me over, but there’s no replacement for 7 hours of commercial free football!! That said, here are the 5 things that caught my attention most.
5. Eagles Offense
Talk about a runaway wagon. Sheeesh! I think you have to start with AJ Brown. Mama.. there goes that man, amirite? He was crushing the Lions short, intermediate, and deep. 10 catches for 155 yards on 13 targets. If this guy gets anywhere close to this volume, he will be top 5. The next parts were two 90 yard rushers, Hurts and Sanders. I understand they played the Lions, but I don’t think the 2022 Lions is one of these 0-16 Lions type teams. I think the Eagles are an offense you want every share you can get.
4. Commanders Offense
Curtis Samuel, stand up! Antonio Gibson, stand up! Even Carson Wentz, stand up! This offense looked like a squad ready to go out on the town! Samuel had 11 touches for 72 yards and a TD. Nobody predicted that. Gibson had 130 yards on 21(!!) touches, including a sick downfield catch contributing to 72 yards receiving. If he’s getting that role, that’s reeeeal nice. Wentz had a typical Wentz rollercoaster game, but 4 TDs and 313 yards is phenomenal for fantasy. Scary Terry had the dragon for a TD. Dotson had two great TDs. This could suddenly be an offense you want to utilize in DFS. It’s like when you wear a pair of pants for the first time in a minute and find a $20 in the pocket!
3. 49ers Offense
It can’t all be good takeaways. What the hell happened to the Niners? Call me a biased Bears fan but this offense seemed a 16 year old, pimple-faced kid learning to drive stick. I understand the weather sucked for the 4th quarter, but for most the game it didn’t rain, the field was just soggy. There was always going to be a learning curve early for Lance considering his lack of experience, but I really thought the Niners would move the ball more easily and win comfortably. I’m sure there will be better days ahead, but I’m worried about all the Niners except Deebo and Lance (for fantasy only, 13 rushes is cash). Elijah Mitchell out 1-2 months means Deebo is likely back to being RB1. Which is super fun to watch, but has me worried because he was more productive as WR1 Deebo. Aiyuk and Kittle (once healthy) will likely struggle until Lance pulls a Stella (and gets her groove back for you youths).
2. Denver Offense
Another yikes… I mean wow Hackett. What is going on in Denver *insert Brian Windhorst meme*? Mel Gordon 12 rushes to Javonte’s 7 (only 2 after halftime), despite the latter looking far more explosive. Jeudy had a #cookin TD catch and Sutton was able to find soft spots in the zone really well. Yet they only get 7 targets a piece when Wilson throws 42 times? Speaking of targets, Javonte turns 12 into 11 catches which is great for Javonte managers, but Russ looked like Charlie Checkdown, not a 240 million dollar man. It was very much.. weird vibes from this gameplan. They looked underprepared and like they abandoned the first drive gameplan of stretch runs and bootleg play-action for no damn reason. I’m still bullish on this offense but of all games, I did not anticipate this one being a problem.
