2025 College Football Futures
2025 College Football Futures
We are on the eve of the kickoff to the 2025 college football season. And while a five game slate is just an appetizer, it only builds the anticipation for the following five day weekend full of college football. But before kickoff happens, there are plenty of futures to examine across different sportsbooks. Heisman Trophy winners, conference winners, College Football Playoff participants, over/under on win totals, and so much more. Here are my favorite 2025 college football futures.

Southern Mississippi: Over 5.5 wins (-120)
Charles Huff is the new head coach of the Golden Eagles after one of the more odd contract extension debacles by Marshall. As a result, Southern Miss welcomed 21 transfers from Marshall alone, the same Marshall team that won the Sun Belt last year and went 10-3 before forfeiting bowl eligibility. In his four years at Marshall, Huff’s team reached bowl eligibility each year. Each Sun Belt team plays a Power Four team, and Southern Miss draws the most favorable: a home game against Mississippi State. We have seen coaches in recent years succeed in year one after bringing over a good chunk of their roster from their previous school. I believe Huff can get the Golden Eagles bowl eligible in 2025.
Auburn: Under 7.5 wins (+140)
Reports out of Auburn suggest there is a reason for concern for Hugh Freeze and company. Jackson Arnold’s summer has not been the best at camp, so much so that Freeze indicated we could see three quarterbacks in the opener at Baylor. The other quarterbacks we could see play in the opener would be Stanford transfer Ashton Daniels and five-star true freshman Deuce Knight. To make matters worse, the Tigers are using a “collaborative” play-calling system; Freeze will have final say, but offensive coordinator Derrick Nix will call first down and opening drive plays, while quarterback coach Kent Austin will call third downs. Talk about a mess for three newcomers to the team, despite a great receiver group.
The Tigers also have a difficult road schedule this year, traveling to Baylor, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma. Factor in home games against Georgia and Alabama, this schedule is no cakewalk. Freeze has struggled against decent competition in conference play; in his first two years at Auburn, Freeze is 5-11 in SEC play. The five teams the Tigers have beat are a combined 8-32 in conference play. Freeze and the Tigers will have to buck that trend to hit at least eight wins this year.

Utah State: Over 4.5 wins (+125)
This is purely a Bronco Mendenhall wager. Mendenhall comes over from New Mexico, where he led the Lobos to a 5-7 record last year. While that does not wow many, five wins is the most New Mexico has had since 2016. Mendenhall has won at least five games in 17 of his 18 years as a head coach, with the lone season coming in his first at Virginia in 2016 (2-10).
Bryson Barnes returns as the starting quarterback, starting in five games last year. Barnes offers a mobility that Mendenhall will appreciate, as he rushed for over 180 yards the last two games in 2024. The defense will need improvement, but Mendenhall can get them on the right track in year one. Mendenhall can get the Aggies to a bowl game in 2025.
Arizona: Under 5.5 wins (-115)

Arizona will now be without a first round weapon in Tetairoa McMillan, and lost their best cornerback in the transfer portal, Tacario Davis, to Washington. Once again, Arizona 10 of their 12 games against conference opponents; due to conference realignment, the Kansas State game on September 13th will not go against conference record. The Wildcats ranked second to last in Big 12 for offense (21.8 PPG; 19 PPG in conference play). Only Houston ranked worse. The Big 12 is chaotic, but I’m not sure if Arizona has the horses to keep up. I’m on Arizona to miss a bowl game in 2025.

Nebraska: Over 7.5 wins (-150)
Nebraska to make College Football Playoff (+900; .5 unit)

I touched on Nebraska last week as a dark horse team to make the College Football Playoff. Year three with Matt Rhule as head coach. Dylan Raiola with a year under experience and Dana Holgorson as his offensive coordinator. A favorable schedule where their first true road game will not occur until October 11th. I’m very high on Nebraska this year and believe they can be in the top quarter of the Big Ten in 2025.
