Tennessee Titans vs. Chicago Bears
Chicago -4; O/U 43
Tennessee +4 (-112)
Everyone’s high on the Bears with the arrival of Caleb Williams and his offensive weapons. And while this feels like the Bears have things right for the first time in awhile, I’m pumping the breaks for Week 1 due to recent struggles of first overall picks in their debut.
Since 2000, 10 first overall selections started in Week 1 of their rookie seasons. They are 1-8-1 SU, completing 54.2% of their attempts while throwing 14 touchdowns to 20 interceptions. Like the Bears, the Titans have loaded up on offensive weapons. Tennessee welcomes Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd to go alongside DeAndre Hopkins. Tony Pollard comes in to run alongside Tyjae Spears after the departure of Derrick Henry. The defense had additions with Ernest Jones IV (Rams), Kenneth Murray (Chargers), Arden Key (Jaguars), Chidobe Awuzie (Bengals), Quandree Diggs (Seahawks), L’Jarius Snead (Chiefs), and second round pick T’Vondre Sweat. The Titans keep this close in Chicago.
Arizona Cardinals vs. Buffalo Bills
Buffalo -6.5; O/U 48
Arizona +6.5 (-108)
Kyler Murray is 16-6-2 ATS when the Cardinals are a road underdog. He’s now a full year removed from tearing his ACL and was able to get eight games under his belt in 2023. Buffalo lost key defensive pieces this offseason, and lost linebacker Matt Milano this preseason. There are question marks surrounding the offense, with over half of their targets and receiving touchdowns gone in Gabe Davis and Stefon Diggs. The team did run the ball more with new offensive coordinator Joe Brady, but who will be Allen’s go-to down the stretch? I like Arizona to keep it close in Week 1.
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Miami Dolphins
Miami -3; O/U 49
Miami -3 (-119)
The Dolphins have covered their last two home openers under Mike McDaniel, and are 6-1 ATS in the month of September. This is a team that tends to fade later as the season goes on and the weather changes to winter. Even with injuries to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, both are expected to play in the opener. I’m on the Dolphins to take care of business against the Jags in Week 1.
Outright Underdogs (.5 Units):
Tennessee +160 @ Chicago
First overall selections are 1-8-1 SU in Week 1 of their rookie year. Tennessee has bolstered their roster with additions on both sides of the ball. I think that continues with Tennessee upsetting the Bears in Week 1.
