Fantasy Football Future Stars: The 2020 Draft Class

The 2020 draft class has been talked about as one of the most talented in recent memory.  Dynasty owners are hoarding their 2020 picks as a result. To help prepare our readers, Fantasy Football Big Cat (Nate Dreslinski) has previewed the stellar 2020 draft class. In a four-part series he takes a look at QB, RB, WR and TE. He then decided to figure out where these guys stack-up compared to the 2018 and 2019 draft classes to learn the true value of our 2020 draft picks.

Introducing The 2020 Quarterbacks

Tua-Tagovailoa-2020-draft-class-fantasy-football-player-valueThe 2019 NFL Draft saw three quarterbacks go in the first round, and saw the Denver Broncos take a QB in the second round. In 2018 we saw the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Arizona Cardinals, and Baltimore Ravens draft a QB in the first round. As it stands today, there are several teams that could find themselves in the market for a starting QB in 2020. These teams include Detroit, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, New England, Miami, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Tennessee, Jacksonville, Los Angeles Chargers, and Oakland. Many of these teams have an older QB at the end of their career and may be picking later in the first round. Teams like Detroit, Tampa Bay, Miami, Cincinnati, Tennessee, Jacksonville, and Oakland could own top-10 selections and be firmly in the conversation for one of these elite QBs.

Introducing The 2020 Running Backs

DAndre-Swift-Travis-Etienne-Jonathan-Taylor-Fantasy-Football-2020-draft-classRunning backs in the NFL do not seem to matter as much as they used to in the 2000’s. More and more we see NFL teams employing a running back by committee approach, and true bell-cow running backs seem to be a dying breed. Today, there are a handful of backs that can be truly leaned on to provide a positional advantage. The 2020 draft class is loaded with talented backs that can come in and be bell-cows or lead a committee. Some teams that could be in the market for one of these offense-changing backs are Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Kansas City, Buffalo, Miami, and Houston. A lot of these offenses are talented and may be that one electric piece from putting them in a position for a deep playoff run.

Introducing The 2020 Wide Receivers

Johnson-Jeudy-Higgins-2020-wide-receivers-classAs the NFL continues to grow and evolve the passing game is more and more important and having multiple WRs on a team that can win 1 on 1’s and move the chains is vital to overall team success. This means the WR position isn’t an all or nothing spot in fantasy. Plenty of NFL teams can support multiple fantasy relevant WRs, so landing spot isn’t as important with WRs as it would be with a RB. As loaded as the RB class is, the WR class has equivalent star power, as I think there are some budding NFL stars amongst the following group of WRs.

Introducing the 2020 Tight Ends

Albert-Okwuegbunam-2020-te-draft-classThe tight end position has evolved tremendously in just the last 10 seasons. Gone are the days of mostly blocking tight ends who were largely a safety valve for QBs. In today’s NFL we see size/weight/speed freaks like David Njoku, Noah Fant, and O.J. Howard. We also have the elite receiving threats who could easily double as WRs like Travis Kelce, Zach Ertz and Evan Engram. In real football, a well rounded TE can open up an offense in both the run and the pass game. But this is fantasy football–we want to see targets, receptions, yards and TDs.

The 2019 NFL Draft saw two TEs selected in the first round. Iowa teammates T.J. Hockenson went No.8 overall to Detroit and Fant at No.20 to Denver. The 2020 class lacks the superstar power of Hockenson and Fant. But, overall it will provide capable starters for NFL teams. Some teams that could be in the market for a game-changing TE in 2020 are Dallas, New England, New Orleans, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Seattle and Washington.
