Week 9 Adds, Drops, Buys, and Sells
What a week! Week 8 was exhilarating but the turnaround is quick. Waivers are running and we have championship rosters to build. With that in mind, here are the adds, drops, buys, and sells to consider making in Week 9.
START/SIT ASSIST | TRADE CALCULATOR
Sell Kyle Pitts
We’ve been waiting for Kyle Pitts to do something. Anything. It finally happened in Week 8 when he caught five of his nine targets for 80 yards and a score. While the target share numbers have been good all season, the lack of passing volume in the Atlanta offense has been holding Pitts down. Against the Panthers, though, Marcus Mariota passed 28 times, his highest total since Week 1 and just his fourth time with more than 20 attempts. As good as Pitts is, he can not reliably put up these types of performances in an offense that suppresses its quarterback to the degree that Atlanta does. If anyone in your league is a Pitts stan or believes this could be the beginning of a turnaround, cash out.
Add Jaylen Warren
Najee Harris isn’t right. Whether it’s the foot or he’s just this generation’s Trent Richardson, something is off. Meanwhile, Jaylen Warren continues to out-produce Harris on fewer touches. It happened again in Week 8 when Warren ran for 50 yards on six carries while Harris barely topped 30 yards on eight attempts. If this keeps up, Warren’s role will continue to grow. And there may come a point where the Steelers decide to rest Harris altogether. However it may happen, Warren needs to be added and stashed in all leagues.
Add Terrace Marshall
We have to acknowledge what has been happening with Terrace Marshall. His snaps, routes, and target shares have all been rising over the last four weeks. It all came together in Week 8 when he had a 92% snap share, 25% Target Share, 95% Route Participation. The results were four receptions for 87 yards and he nearly had a touchdown. With Robbie Anderson shipped to Arizona and PJ Walker installed as the Panthers starting quarterback for the rest of the season, the path has been paved for a Terrace Marshall breakout.
Sell David Montgomery
The Bears may be finally realizing Khalil Herbert is their best running back. Herbert has been getting more opportunities in recent weeks. In fact, he’s had double-digit carries in each of the last two. On both occasions, he out-produced or equaled David Montgomery’s production on fewer touches. As long as this continues, Montgomery is going to be increasingly touchdown dependent in an offense that is hard to trust for a lot of points. And when they are running it in, it’s often times their quarterback calling his own number.
Sell D’Onta Foreman
D’Onta Foreman had the performance of his life in Week 8. He ran for 118 yards and three scores. But that was against a bad Falcons defense and while operating without Chuba Hubbard. Hubbard started and led the way in Week 7 before his ankle injury. We can expect Hubbard will have a sizable role when he returns and will be the primary option in passing situations. Plus, this is still the Panthers offense. We can’t expect 34 points every week. Sell high on Foreman before he crashes back to earth.
Buy DJ Moore
DJ Moore is back. Apparently all it took was PJ Walker to unlock him. Moore was the target on 10 (45%) of Walker’s attempts in Week 7, and then he followed tha up with another 11 targets (31%) in Week 8. Moore took advantage to combine for 13 receptions for 221 yards and two scores over the two weeks. That’s after combining for 174 yards in the first six weeks. Walker should continue to lock-in on his top target which makes Moore a good buy at wide receiver before Week 9.
Buy/Add Donovan Peoples-Jones
I have been talking about Donovan Peoples-Jones for weeks in the weekly FAAB guidance article I do on the Yards Per Fantasy Patreon. He has now topped 70 yards in four of the last five games. He is getting the air yards and the targets have been mostly consistent, too. While he’s been “fine” as a WR4/flex play, the real reason we’ve been stashing him and now actively trying to buy him is the nearing return of Deshaun Watson. Watson will turn up the notch on an already good Cleveland offense. He’ll open up more explosive plays and scoring opportunities. That will be particularly good for Peoples-Jones who could be the Will Fuller of the Browns offense. He could have week-winning performances during the fantasy playoffs. His price is only going to keep rising so get him now.
Drop Parris Campbell
I talked about the impact of Indianapolis’ quarterback change on last week’s “Dead Zone Show.” During that discussion, I talked about why I was particularly concerned about two players: Nyheim Hines and Parris Campbell. There were two reasons for that. One, pass volume. With an inexperienced rookie who didn’t come into the league as a prolific college passer, the Colts were likely to lean more on the run game and less on the arm of the quarterback. While Matt Ryan was dropping back 40, 50, 60 times a game, Ehlinger was more likely to see the Marcus Mariota/Justin Fields treatment. Campbell was getting a lot of his production on volume. Secondly, I was concerned that the more mobile Ehlinger would be more apt to take off and run when he got into trouble, rather than throw it underneath to a Campbell or a Hines. As it turns out, both concerns came to fruition in Ehlinger’s first start. He only attempted 23 passes and he ran six times. As a result Campbell and Hines were each limited to two receptions. I have a hard time seeing any way Campbell cracks your lineup for as long as Ehlinger is at quarterback, making him a safe drop.
Buy Dalton Schultz
Dalton Schultz got through Week 8 healthy and appears to be in the clear after battling a nagging knee injury early in the season. He has Dak Prescott back which will only help matters. With the Cowboys failing to secure a wide receiver at the trade deadline, it will remain CeeDee Lamb and Schultz as the top two options in the passing game. Schultz has been a consistent option when Prescott is in the lineup over the last two seasons and that has picked up again in 2022. At a position that is so hard to find a reliable weekly starter in fantasy football, Schultz is a priority trade target before Week 9.
Add Isaiah Likely
Isaiah Likely played really well in Mark Andrews’ absence in Week 8. It sounds like the shoulder injury isn’t too serious and won’t keep Andrews sidelined for long. Still, Likely is a priority add in case Andrews sits in Week 9. On top of that, Likely could emerge as a usable option even with Andrews on the field considering the team’s current wide receiver landscape.
Add Deon Jackson
When both Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines were out in Weeks 5 and 6, Deon Jackson was targeted 14 times, catching them all. That included a 10-target game against Jacksonville. With Nyheim Hines shipped off to Buffalo, Jackson could emerge with a passing-downs role in Indy. Of course, as I discussed with Parris Campbell, that role will not be as appealing as it would have been with Matt Ryan at quarterback, but Jackson is worth an add.
