Week 10 Adds, Drops, Buys, and Sells

What a week! Week 9 was exhilarating but the turnaround is quick. Waivers are running and we have championship rosters to build. With that in mind, here are the adds, drops, buys, and sells to consider making in Week 10.

Add Odell Beckham Jr.

The rumblings are getting louder and louder and the list of teams who are reportedly in on the Odell Beckham bidding war seems to get longer by the week. The Rams were the original favorites but they are on the verge of falling out of contention and probably don’t make much sense at this point. Von Miller has been publicly recruiting Beckham for months. Jerry Jones entered the chat this week by talking up OBJ on the radio saying he knows “the Cowboys star on that helmet when he puts it on could look pretty good.” There’s also been talk of the Vikings, Giants, Chiefs, Buccaneers, and Packers having interest. Inevitably, he’s going to sign with a contender for the stretch run. The question is, will that happen soon enough to matter for fantasy football? I’m skeptical of that, but he’s certainly worth an add just in case.

Buy/Add Jeff Wilson

Jeff Wilson’s fantasy value has taken quite a roller coaster ride over the last few weeks. He was crushing it as the 49ers RB1 before the team made a move for Christian McCaffrey. Then, he gets dealt to Miami at the trade deadline where he operated as the lead back in his first game. The Dolphins gave up a fifth round pick to get him, which is actually not a cheap buy for a veteran running back so we knew the team planned to use him. Based on his Week 9 usage, they see him as much more than a backup to incumbent starter Raheem Mostert. In fact, Wilson out-snapped Mostert (49% to 47%) while commanding a 10% target share to Mostert’s 7%. He also ran one more route than Mostert. If that’s what he’s doing in his first game after being with the team for less than a week, I imagine there is a larger plan for him moving forward.

Add/Hold Chuba Hubbard

Chuba Hubbard operated as the lead back in Week 8 before his ankle injury. At worst, he’s expected to get the passing downs work when he returns. That role netted seven targets and eight rush attempts in Week 9 between Raheem Blackshear and Spencer Brown. On top of that, D’Onta Foreman crashed back to earth (as we predicted in last week’s article) and could cede some carries upon Hubbard’s return as well.

Sell Chase Claypool and Darnell Mooney

Justin Fields’ ascension in recent weeks has some fantasy gamers excited about the prospects of Darnell Mooney and the recent trade acquisition of Chase Claypool. Let me preface this by saying I like Fields. He is an emerging star. But the reality is that he is getting it done with his legs, not his arm. Fields is still throwing at a bottom of the league rate. In fact, his 28 attempts in Week 9 was his season high. That’s not enough to sustain one fantasy wide receiver, never two. Then we also have tight end Cole Kmet who has been getting more involved as well. They will all have a couple weeks where they put up a nice performance but more often than not, they’ll leave you feeling underwhelmed. Take advantage of the Fields hype and sell his pass catchers.

Sell Curtis Samuel

Curtis Samuel has been one of my biggest preseason hits. When almost nobody was talking about him, I was making a case for him to anyone that would listen. It’s been great. But the switch to Taylor Heinicke at quarterback has caused a shift in the wide receiver pecking order. In every game with Carson Wentz, Samuel out-targeted Terry McLaurin. Samuel had a 21.8% target share with Wentz while McLaurin’s share was 16%. Since Heinicke stepped in, the script has flipped. McLaurin’s target share is 31% with Heinicke while Samuel’s is down to 17%. Samuel got extremely lucky with his 49-yard touchdown that was thrown into triple coverage and needed an official to knock over a Vikings safety to clear the way. He ended up giving you a nice 15.5 fantasy points but based on the recent usage trends, I am recommending that you cash out.

Week 1 targets

Buy George Pickens

We’ve talked about George Pickens a few times this season. He’s flashed here and there but has not been able to string together productive weeks. But the trade of Chase Claypool should help clear the path for more targets for the stud rookie. Pickens is a red zone threat and a downfield weapon. Of course, with a rookie quarterback we can still expect some down weeks but the upside is high and the cost is minimal.

Add Raheem Blackshear

While we’re stashing Chuba Hubbard, Raheem Blackshear is a viable bye week streamer until Hubbard’s return. Blackshear led Panthers running backs with a 13% target share in Week 9. He ran just one fewer route than D’Onta Foreman and more than Spencer Brown. When Carolina is trailing (which is often), Blackshear will be the back taking most of the cheap check downs and racking up PPR points.

Buy Justin Fields

I say it all the time: it’s okay to buy high. This year more than ever, these dual-threat quarterbacks are providing a huge edge in fantasy football. Justin Fields has been the latest to join the trend. His passing numbers are up, he just got a new weapon, and he’s setting records for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single game. As a result, he’s been one of the highest scoring quarterbacks since Week 5. There’s no reason to think this doesn’t continue. If you’re a contender and don’t have one of the elite quarterbacks, consider making an offer for Fields.

Buy Amon-ra St. Brown

Amon-ra St. Brown has been disappointing in recent weeks. Part of that was working through the ankle injury. But coming out of the bye, St. Brown has returned to elite usage with target shares of 27% and 35%. Prior to the injury, his shares were 32% and 35%. The trade of TJ Hockenson will only help open up more opportunities for St. Brown in the middle of the field and in the red zone. The Lions have been one of the top scoring units in football and seem to be playing from behind most weeks which will incentivize passing. We know St. Brown is good and we know the Lions want to get him the ball. Buy before he gets hot again.

Buy Rondale Moore

We discussed buying Rondale Moore a few weeks back when he was running a ton of routes and getting a sizable target share. I was confident his role would be safe even upon the return of DeAndre Hopkins. The usage dipped for one week but quickly recovered for target shares of 18% and 29% over the last two. What’s even more exciting is that he’s not limited to just targets at and behind the line of scrimmage any more. He’s running actual routes. We’re seeing that reflected in his production.
