Prospect Bio

Isaiah Spiller was on the devy radar well before he was putting up 1,000-yard seasons at Texas A&M. At Klein Collins High School in Spring, Texas, Spiller ran for 3,587 yards and 53 touchdowns—nearly 1,500 of those yards and 20 touchdowns came in his senior season. It was enough to earn Division 1/5-6A Offensive MVP for the second consecutive season and four-star recruiting status. Spiller received 20 offers from a number of schools, including Oklahoma where he originally committed to in 2017. However, about six months later, Spiller changed course and decided to follow in his father’s footsteps (Fred Spiller played tight end for the Aggies) and committed to Texas A&M instead.

Spiller impressed from the beginning—rushing for over 100 yards in his Aggies debut. He finished his freshman season with 946 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns and earned freshman All-American honors. His 2020 campaign was even better as he was third in the SEC with 1,036 rushing yards. He ran for nine touchdowns and caught 20 passes. Spiller was named first-team All-SEC and was a semifinalist for the Doak and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards.

Highlight Reel

Best Comparable Player: Kareem Hunt

NFL Draft Projection: Third Round

Bottom Line:

Spiller is your traditional north/south power back who wins with size and lower-body strength. While breaking off long runs will likely be rare for him at the NFL level, he has the patience and vision to take full advantage of the opportunities in front of him. Spiller is a big, durable back who will easily handle 20-plus carries in any given game. He’s skilled-enough in the passing game to warrant third-down usage as well. He displayed good hands at Texas A&M and had more than 20 receptions in all three seasons despite a limited route tree.

Post Draft Analysis:

The NFL has weighed in on the Isaiah Spiller athleticism debate. They let him slide to Day 3 after initial mocks had him going in the first three rounds. He joins a Chargers offense that has been searching for a bigger back to pair with Austin Ekeler for a few years now. The opportunity will be there for Spiller to slide into that role with just Josh Kelley and Larry Rountree in his way. If he earns it, he will have fantasy relevancy inside one of the league’s best offenses.
