If you’re one of the lucky souls who made it to your fantasy championship, congratulations are in order! However, if you’re one of the unlucky souls who had Jalen Hurts, Kyler Murray, or Tua Tagovailoa, you’re probably in need of a quarterback right now. I had Kyler, myself, so I’m in the same boat as you. Let me help you decide who to start as I break down the best options for you on the waiver wire.
Jared Goff (Lions) vs Bears – available in 46.2% of ESPN leagues
In a relatively surprising development, Goff has performed as a top-10 fantasy QB this year. It helps when his defense is so atrocious that it forces the offense to stay in pass mode, but he continues to do well. Goff has scored 21+ fantasy points in three of his last four outings, and has produced five straight games with 14+ points. He also faces a Bears defense that has been horrible against the pass this year, allowing the 10th most fantasy points to opposing signal callers this year. Chicago has allowed 20+ fantasy points to eight different QBs, including 26+ in three of their last four. To top it all off, Goff gets the Bears in the confines of Ford Field, where he has played much better this season. Goff has averaged 21.5 FPPG at home, as opposed to just 12.3 FPPG on the road. It looks like the stars are aligning for Goff to have a good game this week, but we’ll have to wait to see.
Gardner Minshew (Eagles) vs Saints – available in 72.8% of ESPN leagues
Minshew Mania is alive and well in Week 17, as the Eagles will attempt to lock up the 1 seed vs the Saints at home. There are still rumors that Jalen Hurts might suit up for this contest, but I’m going to assume he’s out for one more week. If that’s the case, his direct backup could fill in as the same position for your fantasy team. Minshew played well vs the Cowboys last week, accounting for 22.7 fantasy points against an elite Dallas defense. Minshew doesn’t have a great matchup vs a middle-of-the-pack Saints team, but it’s not the end of the world. What Minshew has going for him is top-tier coaching and weapons around him. He can throw a 5-yard slant to any of his pass catchers and they could turn it into a 75-yard touchdown. We’ve seen Minshew have big games in the past with the Jaguars, so we know the potential is there. The floor is high enough to make me feel good about playing Minshew this week.
Russell Wilson (Broncos) at Chiefs – available in 59.2% of ESPN leagues
This one isn’t for the faint of heart. Wilson’s first season in Denver has obviously been a disaster, and to tack on to it they just fired their head coach, Nathaniel Hackett, after losing by 37 to the injury-riddled Rams. The only reason I’m really considering Wilson here, other than lack of options, is the matchup. Kansas City has allowed the 3rd most fantasy points to QBs this year, giving up 22+ in five of their last seven games. Wilson and backup Brett Rypien combined for 35 fantasy points against the Chiefs just a few weeks ago, so perhaps there’s some hope for a repeat performance. We know the Chiefs should be able to score at will, so the Broncos could be in a pass-happy game script early in this one. However, we know how bad it can get with this offense. Wilson has five games this season with under 10 fantasy points, which is truly horrible. This is the riskiest of the three options, so decide how much risk you’re willing to take before choosing a QB.
I hope this helped you make a decision if you need a quarterback for the finals. Who do you think is the best out of these options? Is there someone I left out? Let me know on Twitter @itssandstorm!
