Top-5 Dynasty QB for 2020
In dynasty, there is no position that lasts longer than quarterback. In the majority of leagues, only one will need to be starting. The proliferation of super-flex and two-quarterback leagues adds a certain intrigue to quarterback dynasty rankings. It’s also the most visible position to the casual fan. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the top-5 dynasty QB heading into the 2020 season. After finishing as the best in the league last season, where will Lamar Jackson end up in 2020?
QB 1 – Patrick Mahomes
In just his second full year of starting, all Mahomes did was throw for 4,031 yards and 26 TDs with five INTs in 14 games. By his standards, it was a “down” year. He finished as QB 7 despite a rough four-game stretch. The surgical precision with which he can carve apart a defense is a spectacle to behold. Just ask Houston fans, all he did was engineer seven straight touchdown drives and bring his team back from down twenty-four to up four in a single quarter. Call it recency bias, but these types of performances are a lot more fun to watch when he’s your QB 1 on your dynasty team.

QB 2 – DeShaun Watson
Watson’s first two full seasons of starting has had him finish as QB 4 both years. He has a top-flight WR, DeAndre Hopkins, and an offensive-minded head coach. This year he threw for 300 fewer yards and 3 more interceptions than 2018, but he was sacked 18 fewer times. The sacks the last two years are the biggest concern. I doubt the front office feels different and will continue to address the line in front of him to keep their franchise QB upright. His athleticism is also a huge bonus, as he’s averaged over five yards per carry his two full years as a starter. His consistent production over the last two seasons, and especially week to week, are what vaulted him ahead of the others yet to come.

QB 3 – Lamar Jackson
This year’s QB 1 was electrifying to watch. He threw for ten more touchdowns than each of the previous two quarterbacks. He ran for another seven touchdowns and over 1200 yards this past year. So why in the heck is he sitting third? It’s all about the lack of longevity of rushing quarterbacks. He won’t play for as long as the others unless his game changes and evolves to more of a pass-first mentality. At that point, I will be happy to reassess and adjust, but as of this writing, he still holds the single-season record for rushes by a QB. With the success the team had, I doubt that formula changes.

QB 4 – Dak Prescott
Surprising to some, Prescott finished as QB 2 in 2019. He threw for 4902 yards, 30 TDs, and ran in another 3. This offseason brings in Mike McCarthy who did help Brett Favre bounce back in 2008 and developed Aaron Rodgers. With a more balanced attack, Dak has shown to be more than capable. While the weapons could be changing, Michael Gallup will be staying in town. If he is the main event, he should be a stable target for Dak to saddle up and ride through the season with. For all the naysayers, Gallup finished as WR 22 in PPR formats with 1107 yards and six TDs. Enough of me horsing around with the puns, let’s get to number five on our list, the Stallion.

QB 5 – Josh Allen
After finishing his rookie season with a flourish, Allen followed up with a QB 6 finish in 2019. He finished with 3089 yards passing and 20 TDs. What sets Allen apart from some of the others is his rushing. He added 510 yards and 9 TDs on the ground. During the draft process, there were concerns with his accuracy. Over 2019 he completed 59% of his passes, a respectable amount. His ceiling is as high as any on this list. Especially if the team continues to improve the weapons around him.
